One of my micro flash fiction stories has been published with Sudden Flash. A Griffon’s Ransom was picked up a couple of weeks ago and published on their site today, July 9, 2025.
Sudden Flash specializes in pieces of 600 words or less, and stories come out on Wednesdays.
A Griffon’s Ransom originated as a micro flash fiction story in the NYC Midnight 100 word Contest last year.
I wrote this story while I was at the Chanticleer Authors Conference , so I didn’t have much time to devote to perfecting it.
NYC Midnight adds parameters for authors to stoke creativity. My genre was action/adventure. I decided to give the story a fantasy spin, including a dragon, but since it was action/adventure, I had to make sure my character was placed in the thick of something big.
The action that had to be included was “hiding in garbage,” so I set it in the dragon’s cave with the character hiding among the bones of the dragon’s kills. Finally, I had to include the word, ‘fail.’
With a one hundred word limit, all of these limitations presented a challenge. I placed second in my group, and I was pleased it performed that well.
Here’s the link to check it out. My story appears after several others, so expect to scroll down a bit. While you’re there, take a look at some of the other great stories. Thanks for reading!
