A Women’s Fiction Review – “Crossfire (Life’s A Rodeo),” by Heidi Herman.

Crossfire’ is a women’s fiction novel about Moirin Garrett, on track to be CEO of her family’s energy company. She’s been a workaholic and has helped the company go international. But now the Board is starting a vetting process to avoid nepotism.

What should be a formality starts to get complicated when she faces problems with an environmental study that should have been a breeze, suspicious IT glitches, and an associate trying to sabotage her career.

And then there’s her family! Mom is nagging her. Her uncle is rethinking retirement and questioning her abilities. And Dad has health problems.

But Moirin has her solid group of lifelong friends to help, her beloved cat, and a budding romance with the last person she’d ever have thought to get involved with–a cowboy.

I really enjoyed the friendship dynamics in this story. It’s the first in a series of four where each book features one of the friends in the group. They all have different issues popping up in their lives, and I could see how we’ll get more into their stories in upcoming books. It was a good way to whet my appetite for the whole series.

Moirin was a great heroine. I loved how she tackled her problems, but could still rely on her circle as the problems closed in. Her character arc moves her from overworked to appreciating and enjoying her life. It’s a balance many of us need, and it really makes you question what you’re taking on as you watch Moirin learn to find that balance.

Herman’s book has a lot of great detail about rodeo, something I am quite unfamiliar with, so it was a fun read from that perspective too. I also loved all the descriptions of food. I enjoy reading about characters who eat good food.

Who is this book for? You’ll enjoy it if you like women’s fiction that explores what you want out of life. It is particularly good if you’re a woman in midlife (or find a midlife heroine refreshing) or if you don’t have children, as Moirin does not, but she still needs to decide where her legacy lies. You’ll also like it if you enjoy some light romance, strong family dynamics, and a lot of intrigue. If you love a cowboy vibe, you’ll find it here too.

I gave it five stars and highly recommend it.
