A YA Time Travel Fantasy Review – “The Disappearing Bloodline (Lavender in Time),” by Avis M. Adams.

The Disappearing Bloodline’ is the second book in the YA time travel fantasy adventure Lavender and Time series from Avis M. Adams. It follows ‘The Disappearing Names.’ I have given it five stars.

This book focuses on the same two teen girl characters as ‘The Disappearing Names,’ Sam and Nicole. In the first book the girls travel to 1901 Portland to save Sam’s family line. This book focuses on Nicole’s ancestors. Their wily opponent, Mr. Stickel, has once again disturbed the timeline for his own personal gain, and if Sam and Nicole don’t act quickly, Nicole’s family is doomed.

This is such a fun sequel. Adams always chooses unique, lesser known locations or times with fascinating history. In the previous book they explored the Shanghai tunnels in Portland. Now they travel to 1929 London right before the financial markets crash and explore Covent Garden and the theater district.

The world building is wonderful. Adams includes such wonderful historic details with the Royal Mail Line, the costuming, and the London streets in a different time. The magic system is more layered and detailed in this book too. We learn a lot about how the bricks work, and how artifacts play in. We also find out about the family members’ roles within the magic and the history of how it developed. I particularly love Archie. Give me a magic cat any day to make the story richer.

Adams has written some determined young women who step up in scary situations. The series has plenty of drama and madcap adventure. There’s no graphic violence, but the stakes are still plenty high. If the girls don’t prevail, Nicole’s entire family, including Nicole herself, will cease to exist.

Who is this book for? It’s a perfect story for young to mid teens, but older teens and adults will also enjoy it, particularly if they enjoy historical fiction, time travel fantasy with light magic, strong female characters, and magic cats.

In my next post, I’ll be interviewing Adams about this book and the series it is part of! I can’t wait to get all my questions answered and get the behind the scenes scoop from one of my favorite writers.

To learn more about Adams in the meantime, visit her site. She also does a lot of great author interviews on her blog, Your Next Favorite Author. Adams is also the author of an excellent post-apocalyptic YA series with stories including ‘The Incident‘ and ‘The Consequences.’

Thanks for reading!
